Muscat, Oman – Under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Dr Fahad bin Al-Julanada, Tamayouz Excellence Award, one of the most recognized architecture awards, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a grand ceremony in Muscat, Oman, on January 17, 2023. The ceremony, held at the InterContinental hotel, was attended by architects from around the world and featured keynote speeches from prominent architects, artists, urban planners and public figures.
During the ceremony, Tamayouz celebrated the winners of the Inaugural Dia al-Azzawi Prize for Public Art in the Arab World.
In 2021 Tamayouz Excellence Award launched its newest award, the biennial Dia al-Azzawi Prize for Public Art, which is part of Tamayouz Excellence Award’s programme of championing and celebrating the built and urban environment worldwide. The new award is named after the internationally celebrated Iraqi artist Dia al-Azzawi, one of the pioneers of modern Arab art, and will run biennially.
Member of the Grand Jury, Architect and Artist Philip Michael Wolfson shared his thoughts on the Dia Al-Azzawi Prize for Public Art and the winners of the inaugural cycle.
Jordanian architect and artist Mais Al Azab received her Tamayouz Medal from Dia al-Azzawi for her artwork, Flatland Pavilion, a multi-faceted architectural installation, Flatland was highly commended by the judging panel.
The Inaugural winner of the Dia al-Azzawi Prize for Public Art was Al-Tahrir Tunnel’s Graffiti by Tishreen Uprising Artists, created during the Tishreen 2019 Uprising in Iraq. The murals, made by various young artists, span the length of both sides of the tunnel under Al-Tahrir square, which was the epicentre of the nationwide uprising.
“I hope we will both be able to promote cultural and artistic values in our society, and enrich the collective memory and ensure that artworks in our cities are closely tied to our culture and history.” said Dia al-Azzawi.
