Tamayouz Excellence Award

TAMAYOUZ DESIGN WORKSHOPS

An intensive seven-day design programme held yearly

Tamayouz Excellence Award and Coventry University announced an international design charrette in 2018. An intensive seven-day design programme, the design charette enables participants to collaboratively work to envision and develop responses to themes relevant to Amman’s ability to confront and respond to multiple future challenges. At the end of the seven days, the participants propose a vision – essential to the future of the city – to be published and exhibited in a public presentation.

The programme is open to design students and recent graduates of architecture, city planning, urban design, and landscape design. The design charrette is led by international experts with regular input from local experts, stakeholders and local institutions. The international design charrette is a collaborative process between designers, stakeholders and experts. It will attempt to define the critical architectural and socio-economic challenges of tomorrow which will influence planning, programme energy, finance and management concepts of today.

Why Amman? Amman was the host city of Tamayouz Excellence Award’s annual award-giving ceremony for several years. And because the design charrette follows the ceremony and is part of a celebratory programme that includes public talks, it focuses on its immediate urban environment. In the future, as the host city changes, so will the focus of the design charrette.

EXPLORING THE ESSENCE OF THE FUTURE CITY

Through an intensive process of analysis and response, we aimed to bring together our growing community of national, regional and international competition winners, architects and academics to discuss global challenges that manifest in the local conditions of Amman, the host city of our ceremony for several years. Cultural exchange, enduring friendships and local knowledge capacity were the goals.

2018 was the inaugural cycle, and saw the participation of over 30 students, practicing architects and lecturers of architecture from around the world, who worked in teams to address topics of relevance.

Here, we share some highlights during the 2018 workshop, as supervised by the facilitators, who are also judges for the Tamayouz Excellence Award.
