Tamayouz Excellence Award is delighted to announce the shortlist for the 2018 Tamayouz Women in Architecture and Construction Award, which is given to women who have contributed to the fields of architecture and construction throughout the Near East and North Africa. The award consists of two categories: Women of Outstanding Achievement and Rising Stars.
The Tamayouz Women in Architecture and Construction Award was established as part of the Tamayouz Excellence Award programme, which aims to champion the best architecture worldwide. It is an annual prize open to women who are from the NENA region and are either employed in the NENA region and specialise in architecture and construction, or who are employed/living abroad but their contribution has had a direct impact on the built environment in the Near East and North Africa region.
While the category received a total of 47 entries from 8 countries this year, six Rising Stars and nine Women of Outstanding Achievement were ultimately shortlisted.

Academic and founder of Tamayouz Excellence Award, Ahmed Al-Mallak said:

The Tamayouz Excellence Award for Women in Architecture and Construction judging panel comprises:
– Professor Jala Makhzoumi – Beirut: Jala is an Iraqi architect and academic who specialises in landscape design. She taught architecture and landscape design at the University of Technology in Baghdad for 15 years and was one of the founders of that department of architecture. In 2001, she founded the landscape design department at the American University of Beirut. She has many research publications and books regarding the field of landscape design. In 2007, she co-founded the Cambridge Centre for Landscape and People in Cambridge. Jala has worked as a consultant in architecture and landscape design in Iraq, Syria, the UAE, Lebanon and Cyprus. She won the inaugural Tamayouz Women in Architecture and Construction Award, which ran in2013.
– Anna Schabel – London: Anna is the director of Wilton Studio Ltd where she works on residential and commercial projects, sometimes as a client developer. She is an architecture writer and visiting critic. Anna studied at East London University, as well as in Germany. One of her many accomplishments includes the production of a film about female architects. Since 2018, she has served as chair of Women in Architecture, an organisation that supports women in the profession and acts as an advisory board to the RIBA.
– Kathy Basheva – London: Kathy is a RIBA-chartered architect who has a background in environmental studies. With international experience, Kathy brings a unique understanding and design flair to her work. She is a regular external critic at the Bauhaus school of architecture and has been invited as a critic to the AA, the UCL Bartlett, and the UEL. Kathy is also the head of Development and Education at the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC).
– Mandy Franz – London: Mandy is a chartered architect, conservation architect and senior associate at MICA Architects. She works on a range of educational and residential projects, designing and delivering award-winning projects in complex historic settings. Mandy is a visiting critic at Bath University and the founder of MICA’s mentoring programme. She promotes inclusion and diversity and was a finalist for the 2018 Best Woman Architect at The European Women in Construction & Engineering Awards.
– Sarah Akigbogun – London: Sarah is an architect, filmmaker, director of the film ‘She Draws: She Builds’, and vice chair of Women in Architecture UK. Trained as an architect and engineer, Sarah founded Studio Aki London, which combines her many disciplines with art and research. Working with her theatre company Appropri8, the studio is also interested in the urban scale, transforming disused sites with temporary installations. Sarah is a sessional tutor at the Canterbury School of Architecture.
– Rima Alsammarae – Dubai: Editor of the Middle East Architect, a Dubai-based publication, and coordinator of the Tamayouz Women in Architecture and Construction.
– Ahmed Al-Mallak – Coventry: Founding Director of Tamayouz Excellence Award and an academic at Coventry University.
The judging panel meeting was hosted by Roca Gallery London, designed by Zaha Hadid.
The winners will be announced on 1st of November 2018.
