Tamayouz Excellence Award, the region’s only architecture competition of its kind, which recognises people and projects, is excited to launch the 2020 cycle of its seven awards and thematic competitions.
Striving to support excellence in architecture across the Near East and North Africa, Tamayouz Excellence Award is now in its eighth year. Since its establishment in 2012, the awards programme has grown significantly, which can be seen in the increased regional and international participation across entry submissions, the advisory board and jury panels, as well as the themes of the prizes. In 2019, the awards programme saw nearly 1000 submissions across its seven awards, representing 64 countries. The jury panel, too, welcomed newcomers, like celebrated Iraqi artist Dia Azzawi, Egyptian academic Dr Soheir Hawas and Greek professor of architecture Konstantinos Adamakis, among several others.
In 2020, the international reach continues. Tamayouz’s thematic Rifat Chadirji Prize takes architects to Cairo, Egypt, where the challenge is to design a pedestrian living bridge over the Nile River. The Dewan Award for Architecture maintains focus on Iraq, where Tamayouz has its roots, with the theme of a youth house complex in Baghdad’s Sadr City.
In addition to the two thematic prizes, Tamayouz looks forward to celebrating individuals via its Women in Architecture and Construction Prize, the Middle Eastern Architectural Personality of the Year (or Mohamed Makiya Prize), and the Lifetime Achievement Award. And the graduation project awards for international and Iraqi students remain a stronghold of the awards’ programme.
Registration for all of the awards is now open, and participants can go straight through to the registration portal here. Below, the brief and page for each award is linked for convenience.
